The Unspooling was a catastrophic event that shattered the world's magical infrastructure, causing civilisations to collapse almost overnight. Before this disaster, magic was a fundamental part of life, with floating civilisations, instantaneous teleportation, and powerful arcane powered constructs being commonplace. However, the ley lines that fuelled this advanced society were violently withdrawn when the High Elves of the Crystal Tower attempted a ritual involving artefacts known as the The Loom Weave of Eightfold. This severed the connection between the arcane and the physical world. Entire cities fell out of the sky, and the magic that once permeated every aspect of life became unstable and dangerous. People who had extended their lifespan with magic, turned to dust. Spell books un-wrote themselves. Portals closed, never to be reopened. The Unspooling marked the end of an era and thrust the world into a dark age where magic had to be relearned and civilisation slowly rebuilt from the ruins.
